Smile Dan's RC10-4 conversion project

Hi All,

About a year ago I scored a new partial original RC10 worlds kit and new partial RC10 Team Car kit in a bargain deal. I sold some of the bits like the worlds chassis (thankfully before the rere was announced) but built a Worlds/Team Car hybrid new car from the remainder of the parts - which ended up looking like this:

After it sat on the shelf for a few months, and in my never ending search for an Intruder EX, I decided to sell it.

However, inspired by Jeff (Gomachv) and Mini's threads on 10talk I decided to pull it from sale and start a project to convert it to 4wd in the style of the old and extremely rare ($$$$) MIP 4-10 legend kits I always drool over.

I had plenty of spares from years of collecting so was excited to get started!

I liaised with Mini and Jeff at length and set about getting to work.

The pulleys were available from RCRacingUK so I bought 2 of them, but could only find 1 layshaft (another is en route as I type and will hopefully not get lost in Omans hopeless postal system) - the pinions used for the idler which drive the belt/pulley combo were purchased from eBay USA and I managed to source an original belt for an MIP Legend (which was not cheap!).....there are a few rumours of MIP re-re'ing the 4-10 conversion but I am impatient and this is a lot of fun!

The essence of the build is to retain the Stealth box at the back of the car and use another stealth up front, which will be in a laydown orientation - mounted to a custom shock tower, bolted to a custom nose plate. The front mounts have also been modified to accomodate the front gearbox.

Due to the belt running off the idler shaft, the belt will run in the opposite direction to the motor and wheels, i.e. when the car is moving forwards the belt will be running backwards - this is cool and the same as the original MIP kits.

The rear gearbox was quite straightforward, make holes for the flanged bearings in the stealth casings and fit the pulley/pinion.

The front however as you can imagine takes some more thought - I initially started using Optima Mid wishbones (as I have a few) and hubs/carriers but tonight I'm going to try RC10 front wishbones with the Mid hubs and carriers.

Luckily I had some Kyosho Lazer CVD's which are a perfect fit - just need to check the length once the RC10 arms are on.

There isn't much clearance for the steering system so I got the dremel out and it should now be ok.

Once the 2nd shaft arrives for the front g/box I'll be able to route the belt and cut the rear bulkhead/tower.

Anyway a few pics, more to come - hope you like it so far

More soon!

It's addictive! I just shipped off my prototype and have a fresh ReRe worlds to start on V2.0. This time I'm going b44 knuckles. People don't seem to care about era correct, but I'm a firm believer in staying brand specific when possible

Hi Jeff! It is addictive like most things with R/C cars I'm definitely an addict.

This is how she sits as of now - I messed up a set of nose tubes whilst cutting them but luckily had some spares. Steering has more than enough clearance now and I am probably going to cut the front stealth casing to make it lower profile - then fashion some kind of rubber cover to seal it - that's the plan anyway! Still waiting on the 2nd shaft so I can start fitting the belt and cutting towers/bulkheads!

I'm going to try and fit an RC10 Sidewidner body as this thing looks too modern.

Sidewinder will be perfect! The front wing is about perfect with the trans.

I'm going to have to try the center idler mod like you an mini have played with. I really like running off the topshaft for clearance reasons, but the idler style would be a whole lot easier

Hi Jeff, without your brilliant idea of using the front stealth..... we couldn't extrapolate this project further

Million thanks Jeff !!

Default Maiden run went really well

Well I stuck in some electrics last night and gave her a test run today and wow! Exceeded all my expectations, it runs great! Thanks again to Mini Eason and Gomachv (Jeff) for the ideas

Pre-electrics:

Electrics used:

ESC: Novak Hammer Pro
Motor: Old 19 turn brushed
Servo: Low profile core
Battery: 4200mah shorty LiPo

Wheels: Avante Black Special Pink
Tyres: Vintage worn Schumacher CAT Full spike (1.9"?)

Whilst I'm waiting for my Sidewinder body to arrive I found an old unknown temporary orange body to use. Next I may remove the front Stealth and Dremel it to remove the top part as there is no topshaft used at the front, then fabricate a dust cover to keep the innards clean.

Hope you enjoy the videos

Nice result. You're really into pink lately, or not? Also pink wheels on your Optima racer. Pink is the new black?

Default Needing some help

Hi Dan, Was thumbing through the internet and came across your beautiful 4wd dual stealth conversion. I have always wanted a 4wd RC10, but since the 4-10 conversion is so INSANELY expensive on ebay these days I have been unable to find the $1,000 to buy the kit. I have always wanted to do a 4wd coversion. I was hoping/hoping if you might be willing to help me with some of the details for your conversion. I always loved the RC10 4wd coversion, but could never really afford the conversion when it came out.( lunch money and a weekly allowance would only go so far). Let me know your thoughts on if you can help.
Thanks in advance
Devin

No problem, happy to help.

I haven't updated the this thread in a while - the car has been revised and is now running much more efficiently since I eliminated the 2 tensioners in the drivetrain and got a custom M3 belt. Also now using RC!0 front arms, Yokomo wheels but still the Mid hubs and carriers.

I'm also trying to get a sealed 2 gear front stealth case made, at the moment I have chopped the top part of the front gearbox.

Parts used so far:

1 x Gomachv nose plate, shock tower and upper link standoffs
1 x rere Stealth case (used in rear, original stealth used in front)
2 x Robinson Racing 26 tooth 5mm 48pitch pinions
2 x 3Racing 18 tooth Pulleys 3RAC-3PY/18
1 x custom M3 belt
4 x 5x8mm flanged bearings
2 x Tamiya FF03 spur gear shafts
2 x Kyosho Optima Mid Hubs
2 x Kyosho Optima Mid Hub Carriers + 4 wheel bearings
4 x Kyosho Optima Mid Kingpins
2 x Kyosho Turbo Optima Mid UJ's
Yokomo adaptors
1 x Spare Battery cup, cut for shorty LiPo
Miscellaneous screws and nuts
