Will give you the short version as is It easy all depends if your handy doing this sort of stuff

First degrease item
Scotch item
Prime
Wet flat
Top coat
Then you need water in a dipping tank heated to about 27c
Lay film on water
Spray activator on film (wait about a minute before spraying)
Dip item on a angle through film
Rinse clean
Clear coat

I've seen a bit of this on you tube but how durable is the finish on say motorbike petrol tanks or helmets.

On tanks fine as the top coat clear lacquer is automotive .as for helmet could only be done if casting could be taken of as your dipping in water

Are there any companies that will make films to your design?

This is great work and something I've been looking at trying on clear shells for a while now. From the steps you've described earlier, did you have to perform the same for the bodyshells? ie. scuff the surface, primer etc.? Also I assume you managed to get this onto the inside of the shells? :)

Any advice specific to how you did your shells would be great as I may take the plunge and try this out myself

When dipping shells you are doing the hole proses in reverse first clean the shell inside then dip it first then apply the base cos colour u need then I us all give it a backing coat in white don't forget though you cannot use automotive paint on rc shells in has to be polycarbonate paint

moggers 16-06-2015 04:07 PM

Thanks very much for the reply

When I get the time I'll definitely give this a go! How hard can it be!?!?

Same as any other painted shell I dip all mine on the inside and the paints I use are for lexun shell (tamiya) poly

Do you mind me asking the technique for dipping on the inside a shell? As most the videos the film is shiny side down on the water? So does that effect the finish?

Thinking of doing a supastox shell just not to sure how it would work!

corsa148 21-10-2015 10:12 PM

Hi yes the technique I use for dipping on the inside is straight in then a full barrel roll as u push the shell through if that makes sense does take a lot of practice to get right doing I on the inside also as for the film just lay it on the water as normal people think you loose colour all rubish has as much colour as dipping on the outside if not better as the shine you get off the clear lexun on the outside is great
