I don't think the setups have changed too much, some folk run silver springs on the front and many run the Ghea pistons.
The super-short wheelbase mod that I hear was common a few years ago seems to have fallen out of favour.
I believe the smaller spur is as you suggest, to reduce the pendulum effect caused by the motor hanging out of the back.
