The cougar is no weaker than any other off-road car - the main issue with them is the bearings. the ones schumacher supply are so cheap and nasty they may as well have included brass bushings. The majority of the issues with the Cougar are with the gears and those problems appear to be caused by bearing tolerance issues and premature failure.
Get some decent bearings in it and then you should be fine.
