Have only used rcs lm so can't comment on other brands but i have not had a issue with it, i tend to spray mine on as it provides a nice smooth surface to cut on, usually around 4-5 coats flash dried with a hairdryer then allowed to go off in the airing cupboard, overnight for the last coat
As for cutting pin stripes or the rest of the design i always cut the lot at the start as overspray can mask the design on the outside where as providing you haven't gone too heavy with the paint you should still be able to see the cut lines on the inside
It's trial & error really with getting it thick enough but if you have enough on it will pull off the shell no probs & doesn't crack, i always use a new scalpal blade with each shell
