reverse connection doesnt always kill them either it can depend on a quick connection usally accompanied by a large audible "crack"
in the olds days the brake fets would die which meant you still hade forward but no brakes !!

I remember reverse wiring my speedmaster silver star. It was toast. I can still smell it
That was over a months' worth of paper round money up in smoke.
