B44 Shock rebuild issue

I am rebuilding the shocks on the B44 but having problems getting the snap clip to snap.
Also, the whities o ring keep splitting trying to get them to sit right.

I dont normally have this problem with the B4 and thought the shocks were the same.

Any ideas?
