With a 6.5 your probably better with about 50/60% timing (middle on LOSI ESC?). I run a 5.5 set on 50% timing, 15deg, geared on 10 to 1 and everything is fine temp wise and very fast, too fast really, oh and with intellect lipos.
If you overtime your motor you will just generate a lot of heat, max timing is generally used for stock type motors, with the amount of timing reduced as the turns get less (general rule).
You could do to get yourself a pocket temp gun, they are about £15 quid from maplin. Then you can see what temp your motor is after a race, should be around 150-160degF , any more your overgeared/over timed , anyless go up a pinion!

There's always exceptions but this should give you a starting point - you could do to borrow some lipos for a quick blast to see if your cells are the weak point, dont know where you are? you could try mine im at batley regional on sunday - SAM
