seems like hpi`s new esc is made by hobbywing too (new v3 too)

Orion may simply have developed the R range of speedos and got Hobbywing to manufacture them, who better to make your speedo than someone who makes tons of them anyway! As long as its to your specification (software and physical parts) then it should all be good.

So, long story short, even if the manufacturer is Hobbywing, it really doesn't matter. This is a product designed and manufactured to Orions specification and with such a good name, they wouldn't dare tarnish it by releasing a new range of products that are no good.

So then SP and Orion aren't just rebranded copies of other Hobbywing speedos? I'm just getting tired of guys saying its the same esc's with different stickers without any real explanation. Seems to be a lot of guessing.

Nope, they will be designed to Orion specifications. Hobbywing are simply a manufacturer. That's IF it is Hobbywing...

It's my understanding that the Orion ESC is made by Hobbywing. If that's a problem to anyone, then so be it. I also believe that this isn't the HW V3, and that is due later.

Ultimately, as someone suggested - if you wanted to have an ESC made, and you couldn't do it yourself, then going to an ESC manufacture isn't actually a bad idea!! That doesn't mean that all ESC's that manufacture makes are the same. They might be, they might not be!! You can probably count on one hand the number of people that actually know FOR SURE - and those people are likely to be inside the actual manufacture, and are unlikely to tell you!!

There is one motor manufacture that makes motors for a couple of the major manufactures - but that doesn't mean all those motors are the same, although it is clear that they share certain components.

The speedo is built for Orion by HW. End of.

That's no bad thing, and it is a unit built specifically for Orion (so won't be rebranded as anything else), but is not an Orion home brew as many people seem to think.

What it isn't is a V3 HW in a rebaged case... call it a V2.5 if you will. It comes out of the same factory as the other HWings, and is designed by the same guy.

There is no doubt the Orion is a damm fine unit, and certainly visualy looks loads better than the current HW v2 120A...and from what I've been told the internals are a step forward over the old ESC too.
Personally, I'll wait for the v3 HW to be released thanks, which will contain most of the internals of the Orion, with a few other tricks. However, there is plenty of room for both on the market

If you doubt my above points, this comes direct from the HW factory, as I do have close contacts with them, being based out here.

TryHard is spot on.

Main upgrades over the V2.1 HobbyWing hardware are

double sensor port position
higher rating fets (not necessary in offroad as the number of people using 60A escs show)
ability to use larger power wires
heatsink case.

The HobbyWing V3 is going to be a very different animal ... all I can say is watch this space as it's going to break some fresh ground when it arrives around end of quater 1 next year!! (ok ... quick teaser ... BlueTooth ... )

In Touring cars in Hara's latest set ups he is using HW - can't get better than that.
Isn't it funny how many team drivers churn out so much rubbish.
I remember when a British manufacturer had a hole drilled slightly wrong on their topdeck which made the car tweak very easily.
Many of the team drivers were denying this was the case - funny how a new top was supplied on request that cured the tweaking.

this makes me chuckle as edd said hw make the esc for orion to there specs same as sp just because orion have got a good team driver base and been around longest the orion is the best but reality is it is no better than the rest.

orions first attempt of brushless ecs was pretty crap and there motors were copies of the fiego motors just like sp and gm.

dont get me wrong orion name is good in this sport does it matter. i dont think so.

To be honest if it sounds like I'm knocking the R10, I'm not, it is a great ESC.
I can fully understand why some people would want to by it (we live in a time when brand is king after all), and if knowing that the esc is made by HW hurts the product, then more fool you. Just look how many titles the old SP has won, also made by HW. (I can name two TC worlds in that list!).
All things considered, the R10 is the best ESC on the Market now. But bang for buck, the 120a HW wins hands down.

Anyway, in an attempt to bring it slightly back on topic... Interesting to note that only one setup is using any form of boost/turbo, which is for the 4x4sct! Surprised no one thought to use a bit of turbo for more top-end

Ran my Orion R10 and worked very well in the 4WD. SP ESC is still for my 2WD.

A lot of electronics are made by this same factory.

The Hobbywing version (i am not sure if is the factorys own name or not) is cetainly made at same place there are many brands using this factory for their own design.

I know Oscar Jansen spent a lot of time working on this ESC design so although it may be similar to the Hobbywing it is not the same in performance or every component.

That said Hobbywing range is very good value for money.
