Diff Tightness
I ran my 511 for the first time on the weekend and it was great, I did have issues with the diffs slipping however. I was wondering what procedure most use for setting the tightness?
I know associated diffs are tightened all the way down, then backed off a turn, but the 511 manual seems to indicate that you run them as loose as possible without them slipping i.e. install the diff, then tighten until you can no longer make it slip Thanks in advance |

I tighten it all the way; then loosen by half a turn. I've run it this way without problems on a loose grip track.
It's the slipper clutch on the layshaft that's most important to get right as it's the thing that protects the entire drivetrain. Julius. |

I tigthen it the same as jhammond describes.
Only thing I do different as desvribed in the manual, is insert two lock nuts per diff. This keeps the lock nuts from stripping, since I have during diff rebuilds, stripped about 6 nuts by now when using the single lock nut methode. Since I am using the double lock nut methode I haven't stripped a single nut

I would think so, and i think that the double nut method is a very good idea, as i have stripped afew nuts but will be trying this method!
Thanks for the advice Andy

Setting the slipper really depends on the traction of the track. The most important thing is to have the slipper looser than the diffs.
I would set it reasonably loose, then test it. This way you won't cause any serious damage to the drivetrain. I set it so that it slips noticeably for a metre. If you run the slipper too tight, the wheels will spin on the surface, and it takes a while to put the power down. Think of the slipper clutch as traction control off a start. But it's all down to preference. Julius. Last edited by jhammond; 09-09-2009 at 07:34 AM. Reason: A spelling mistake. |

Thanks again guys
FYI for the diff nut stripping problem, the TRF416 uses the same diff screw but has an all in one diff nut e.g. the nut and carrier are a single piece of metal. You cant strip it, it'll break the diff screw before it strips |

Hi,
Does anyone know if the 9805889 M2 lock nuts are those included in the 9949350 diff screw/nut set ? I just want to order some extra lock nuts, since only the lock nuts get stripped and not the screws... Thanks

Don't know if they're the same as included but they will work just fine.
Having said this, as CraigM says above, you're better off with the TRF416 part. You have to discard the 416 screw because it's too short... I say discard so you don't mix them up and blow a diff. Part numbers are 9804374 and 51341. |
