Sorry, but those pictures are not of the 2011 Avante. The new one will feature aluminum front uprights, new shocks, a gold colored motor, and carbon fiber decks and shock towers instead of FRP.

Interesting, but I want to know when they plan to re-re the other classic Tamiya that still commands totally stupid prices on ebay - the 959. Unlike the Avante, that was not only an amazing piece of engineering, but it actually worked too.

Racing?
Did the Avante have any racing success?
I spent ages staring at it in the tamiya catalogue as a child. I was racing in wrexham at the time, the first week they came out all the regular a finalists had them. The next week they were back to using their optima mids an cats! This was on an undulating tarmac track with no jumnps at all. I will be buying one to have a try at racing anyway. Anyone tried an original with brushless? |

A friend of mine raced the Avante2001 brushless with a 5.5 turn motor i think. Very fast but due to the lack of a slipper it´s a matter of time until the gears are completely worn. Not recommended!

I had the original and the wheels looked stunning and were the only item that didn't break easily and the car was as fragile as china. Explains why that video was on sand as it wouldn't break on a surface like that. Bumper wasnt up to the job - too flexible, gearbox gears didnt last long as was basically rubbish. If its the same as the original then a waste of money.

If it lasted a race without a wheel falling off it was a pleasent surprise. The suspension was unable to cope with grassy off road tracks, and every time it was airborne you just winced hoping it would survive.
As far as I remember it was a flop sales wise, probably that's why it has become collectable. Looked Pretty though so it's a nice one for the shelf. It would have been nice if tamiya based a new avante on the 502.

From TRF site:
"In 1988 TRF entered the Avante into the JMRCA Championships in Japan, the equivalent caliber of race as the U.S. ROAR Nationals. This move proved to be a great opportunity as this Japanese National Championship resulted in getting TRF ready for its first appearance at the 1/10 Electric IFMAR (International Federation of Model Auto Racing) World Championships. Tamiya ended up finishing 7th overall in its first international competition and thusly established the current TRF style of using information gathered from these races to better develop radio control products." |

I'm gonna get one if it stays relatively true to the original, even though I like the Egress look better
It's just one of thoes cars most of us dreamt about ages ago but could not afford. Going to love the build, the first drive and the look of it on the shelf ages after lol. |

My dad had a Vanquish in the late 80's and it was strong even tho it was based on the Avante. Must have been all that plastic . If that comes out too I'd love to get one again.

I started driving RC cars (not racing yet) about the same time the Avante hit the shelves. It was too expensive for me so I settled with a monster beetle, but I always thought the Avante was the nicest looking RC racer ever.
A few years later, the Egress was the car to have. (Over here, the local shops mostly carried Tamiya and nothing else. Associated, Schumacher, ... were as rare as a white elephants). I wanted to try some local races but I was still not able to afford an Egress so I settled with the then brand new Manta Ray, hopped up with ball diffs and hopup shocks. The biggest shock to the local racing community was that my cheap plastic Manta Ray absolutely destroyed the Egresses, Vanquishes and other Avante deratives on the track. I've read an interesting theory somewhere where they say that on modern (= smooth) tracks, the Avante family would do a lot better |

Ok, just read that report from the Area52 link in a previous post.
it seems that most of the design elements of the vintage buggy are carried over into the 12th century. I didn't know they were making buggies back then. Yay it is forsooth as good as ane olde buggee one could finde in ye buggee shoppe. |

Having raced one of the original ones, I found that I needed a second one just to have sufficient spare parts. The shocks used to jam if it was run in dusty conditions, and there was a huge amount of slop in all those rose joints (both on the ball/cup, and on the thread). Indoors on carpet the handling was excellent, provided you got it straight before accelerating hard (if you didn't, the inside front wheel wound start to spin and then you'd lose all drive).
Looked wonderful though. |

i found it funny yet quite symbolic of the avante that in the vid the wheel fell off within 3 minutes!
Wont stop me from having one tho |
