Baking, Boiling or Acetone??
Hi,
I need to remove some tyres from some old rimss and put them on some new ones, which method of removal will work best for this??? I have read up on it but could do with an experienced point of view. Thanks

Acetone is in my opinion the best way, I use the stuff from nuclear-rc, found it to be some of the best stuff to use, use a small amount in a sealed tub, cut the tires of the rim, remove the foam and leave for a day or so.

Acetone here as well. Have got a container which is big enough to do 4 or so sets of tyres, I hang them from the lid above a small amount of acetone in the bottom of the container.

Acetone. I juse use a sandwich box with a rubber sealed lid, and nail varnish remover from Tescos.
Tried baking and even with the windows open and an extractor fan running the house stinks of superglue for hours afterwards |

If your looking to give yourself and everyone in your house a mild lung disorder then baking is probably the way to go
If your bored of the skin on your hands and have endless amounts of spare time to stand staring at a pot of boiling water for hours then boiling is the one! Acetone isn't the nicest substance either but with a suitable container left in a safe place over night the tyres will fall off next day, easy! Just make sure you keep it somewhere the dog/kids won't drink it. By the way does anyone know if tyres that have been through the acetone treatment are useable? Does it change the composition in terms of softness etc, they always have a milky white residue on them but feel ok in the hand! |

yellows are normally re-usable for club races etc, but greens are no good after.
You probably wouldn't want to run the tyres at a major meeting as they do tend to have some residue on and may not grip as well as new tyres. Not sure on BB tyres, been a long time since i used them.

tyres.
I use acetone as well. does it perfectly, 24 hours etc etc.... as everyone else.
It does evaporate unless you have a very air tight sealed container. I have tried to get the tyres off complete out of interest and managed a couple of times, but other times they rip, so i would say the acetone does have an effect on the rubber, and not surprized its lethal stuff Right! I would prob say best to remove useless tyres as you dont want a used acetoned tyre slpitting and coming off in a final now do you??

If you do want to reuse tyres then boiling otherwise Acetone all day long, but remove the insert first!

inserts
I have acetoned the tyres off with inserts in and they were ok, The spomge ones. the red (shumy) foam ones, well, lets say, they just hated the acetone and disintegrated lol............
But the sponge seemed to survive.....

I bought a 25L fermentation bucket from Wilko's for about £12. Made a wire mesh circle with some 2 inch standoffs so the mesh is clear of the bottom of the bucket.
This allows any wheels and tyres to sit in the fumes rather than the liquid so the liquid is re-useable. Also this means the tyres still come off easily without having been soaked in acetone. Currently have about 5 sets of SC10 wheels and tyres in there as I'm swapping my truck over to hex drive and wanted to transfer the tyres over to new rims. Does take slightly longer for the tyres to come free as they're not actually in the liquid, but saves time in that you can do a shed load of wheels in one go!!

I have the same setup. a 10L big food container with a mesh in the bottom.
I think I can fit 12 or 16 wheels in at once and the foams don't sock up all the liquid. |

I use Belstan's finest liquid and dump the whole lot in it!. Inserts come out fine, albeit a little bigger!, quick wash in water and they shrink again!. Never needed to use the tyres again but I wouldnt as they go white

I put some acetone in one of these tin coffeecans.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_C1FatptSQF...516_2_3031.jpg A unusable front rim in there, and then the others. Forget about them for a day of two and the fumes will have done their magic. |

I have a massive storage box with a rubber seal lid,
I throw all my tyres in there, when it gets full, Put about 500ml of acetone in. Yes its a big box! then leave it for a week or so, The tyres all just fall off. And you dont need to cut the tyres either, So they can be re-used if needed. I tried all the other methods and none worked for me. |
