hi guys, we have a loada people running 22's at our local club and again diffs were one of the first things to go in these cars... one fella tryed a sc10 diff and ended up wreckin his whole gear box so that was a no no from our point of view... we ended up ordering the individual parts to build our own diffs... a bit more expensive but we didnt care... although from what ive heard recently is the out drives are currently out of stock everywhere but thats how weve been the good old geard diffs... far better on astro... just seems to be smoother out of the corners...

as for oil weights and tight o rings i oiled the o rings up a lot... i didnt the first time i built it but then took it apart and rebuilt it oiling up the o rings and as to oil weights either 1000 or 2000 weight oils... the main oil being 2000 in our club but some prefer the 1000

I started off with 3k but on high grip tracks found it was twitchy when putting power down out of tight corners, went up to 5k and it is a lot more settled and accelerates and brakes like nothing else on the track, I had to turn brakes down a lot as it was just making the slipper squeal and locking back wheels up! I used green shock slime on the outdrive o rings when building and had no issues when binding, but I also ran the diff in by putting one wheel on the ground and letting power through the loose wheel and alternating it starting with low power and building up. Never looked back since fitting it, highly recommended and loads more rear end grip, even on frost covered astro, plus it dials out some of the excessive steering the 22 is plagued with. |

Cheers Darren, was going to order another as a spare so have been pre-warned!
Are they full of that nasty thick grease like the SCTE ones are as standard? First thing i'd do is rip it apart and check it over before fitting |

I've just put a pre-built diff in mine. It did comes with a little oil in it already, but not enough for my liking, so stripped and re-filled mine with 80wt shock oil Sounds a bit thin I know but its all I had !! and anyway only feels a wee bit thinner than the stock oil, which must be around 1000wt ....
First run tonight on polish and carpet at Caldicot ... can't wait !! |

Update on friday nights run ....
TBH, the difference from the ball diff felt quite subtle to me, with the light diff oil the car was more manoeuvrable on the tight track we had than the ball diff was, but I was hoping for better traction/drive/braking really so am going to try uping the diff oil to 1000wt and see how that goes ... |

Gear diff on carpet we are running between 3000 and 10000 wt. lower wt for tracks with lower bite and thicker for high bite

Cool buts its not the carpet I'm having problems with. We usually have around 25% polished floor so setup is always a compromise between the two. I'm hoping by increasing the oil to 1000wt it will give me better drive on the polish and have less steering bite on the carpet ...
... anyone tried this sort of surface with a gear diff ? |
