TRF 502x Gear Diff DIY...
OK...
I will start to give you guys the 1st part of the Puzzle for making the Durango Dex410 Gear Diffs work with the TRF 502x... the parts list... it's going to cost a little bit but it will be worth it not having to deal with the TRF502x ball diff maintenance Anyways... on with the parts list... Durango DEX410Parts TD210001 Gear Differential Set x2 TD310005 17T Bevel Gear x2 TD310116 Driveshaft Gear Input (2.0mm) x1 TD310145 42T Light Weight Machined Differential Ring Gear x2 (Optional) TD310290 Light Weight Molded Cross Shaft/Gear Set x2 (Optional) MIP Parts 13126 Center Input Hub x1 (or x2 depending on shimming) 13133 Center Drive Shaft Front 89mm x1 13141 Center Drive Shaft Rear 69mm x1 13122 #1 Pins & Screws x1 13121 #1 Orange "PUCKS" x1 So this is Part 1 of 4.. and I will have Pictures to follow in the upcoming weeks on what areas need to be modified in the gear box housing to make the diff fit.. most of everything is drop in and the drive shafts are Lightweight alloy so they will be comparable to the Alloy TAMIYA ones.. if not lighter... One last thing.... we might be able to make the Durango DEX410v4 Two Way Slipper fit as well more to follow...

Any indication on the cost of the conversion?
I'm running TSR Ceramic ball diffs in my 502X and they are doing the job nicely. they cost around $80 US total for the car.

.... . Nope.. I like the strength of the Sus arms and other parts over the durango.. I would have tried to use the B-MAX-III gear diffs but finding parts for those is even worse..

re
You should try the Team C TC4 gear diff, worked for me with very little modification.

Unfortunately I never took photos, but the main things that needed was the inner of the lower gear boxes needed to be dremeled to create room for the diff, and the drive cups of the diffs need to be shortened as they interfere with the travel of the shocks. They need to be shimmed correctly for the best performance. You need the front dogbones from Team C aswell.
I could drive the car much faster and had more fun with gear diffs than ball diff. I have not raced in almost 2 years, I plan to start up again soon, so I will post photos when I open it up again. Its was a easy conversion and much more simple than using the durango diffs. I got the idea from another post in the tamiya section regarding the use of team c gear diff in the 502x.

re
just use the team c driveshafts and its not a problem.
So the mods that need to be done are: Dremel inner gear boxes to make space for the diff( just the inner ribs on the top and bottom) Dremel the outdrives to make them about 0.5cm shorter Team c drive shafts front and back. Do not recall needing different wheels, it was a straight fit. Needs to be shimmed correctly. I am pretty sure thats all you need to do,.

Hi,
Team C gear diffs arrived. It is not necessary to dremel the gear case, only must be shimmed correctly. To achieve the 2,8mm you can use a 850 ball bearing (the one used in the ball diff) plus 0.3mm shim. I can't test the car until I buy the gear silicone (I think 7k or 6k front diff and 3k or 2k rear diff -outdoor track-) and the front and rear Team C CVD. Best regards |

That is awesome right there !!!!
Please take more pic's once you have the final cvd's installed on the car with the gear oil up and ready to go... Also what is the weight difference between the TRF502x diff and the Team C gear diff...?

Weight without oil is considerably higher. I think this would be the handicap of this mod. Probably the next week I can give you the numbers . I'm anxious to test it! |

The weight difference should not be too much of a problem... since the TRF502x is a little on the light side for a 4wd buggy
I shoud have my parts later next week as well.. so this will be nice to test out

Nice... so only about 13 grams per set... so after you cut them down you might be about 11~12 grams per set...
Now to see if the Dogbones fit correctly
