Threaded Pinion
Just wondered if anyone had some little trick to remove threaded pinions off the motor. Any help much appreciated...

Threaded pinion? Not following.
You mean the pinion is threaded onto the motor shaft? |

yes, the pinion is stuck on the motor as the pinion screw is threaded.

If you mean the hex is rounded (not threaded) then either a mate with an MIP 1.5 driver (these are brilliant), or cut a slot in the grub screw with a dremel cutting wheel. You'll have to sacrifice the pinion but will rescue the motor.

Apologies, rounded. Thanks for the info, might be dremel time...

Get a soldering iron ( clean head ) place it on the grub screw, this normally allows you to remove the screw etc

Hi
You could also use a pinion puller: MiCk B. :-)

The options for breaking them are stripping the thread or rounding out the head. Looks like you've rounded it. You can drill out the grub screw if you have a drill press and some decent bits, trying to do it by hand is a pain, but can be done. Pinion will probably be toast. Slightly larger hex key can work (sometimes the next size up imperial can work, or a larger torx bit, might need pressing/tapping into the grub screw though.) Or cutting a slot as above. Heat will do it if it's an aluminium pinion (thermal expansion of aluminium is much greater than steel. I've done it with one of those turbo lighters. It almost fell out with the lightest touch of the hex key.) Simplest option, if you can wait (or have one to hand), is the pinion puller as above. |

Thanks everyone, I've just invested in a pinion puller...

MIP driver will surely do it, or a small easy out run in reverse to grip the screw and spin it out.
I'll be able to do it Paul, if you are stuck. Hope to see you racing sometime soon :-)
