Default pinions and spur gears

hi all just wondering what to do if I want more speed but a good acceleration speed at the same time?

Hi Tom,

Do you know what pinion and spur you are running on your car? The higher the gear ratio (smaller pinion or larger spur) the more acceleration and less top speed the car will have. So to get more top speed you need to run a lower gear ratio (larger pinion or smaller spur).

Because we currently run on a surface with so little grip running a larger pinion might also help the car accelerate. The reduced overall acceleration from the large pinion will make the car less prone to break traction and might increase the acceleration as a result. Just be careful of motor temps when increasing the size of the pinion though

Also you might be able to increase the power of your speed controller or transmitter depending on which makes you have.

I hope this helps

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the reply. I am currently running a 25 pinion and a 89 spur is this a good combination for a mix of top end and acceleration?

Just worked out the final gear ratio of the Mi3.5 with that pinion and spur, it comes to a ratio of 6.41

As I said in the other thread to Lee I am currently using a ratio of 5.9/6 ish. So you could try going to a 26 or 27 pinion, so long as your motor temps are ok.

I'm going to pm (as im not sre what we can and cant post) you with some useful resources for working out the ratio and setting your car up. To be honest though your car looked really good yesterday and was very fast
