Default Battery decision - Advice please

Hi guys

Bought my son a FTX Vantage Brushed, to see if he would get into racing. Its looking like he will and he should soon be good enough to go racing.

The vantage comes with a 1800mAh nimh, which I charge using the charger I already had for charging the nimh receiver packs for my 1/8 nitro.

Not timed the run-time for his car, but can't see how i will get by at a race meeting with just one pack. So the question is do I get a couple more low/mid capacity cheap nimh packs. Get one high capacity nimh pack.

The other complication is that if he sticks at it, I am likely to switch from 1/8 nitro to 1/10 electric. So whilst lipo seems overkill for my son, is it worth investing in a new charger and cells now, before I go too far down the nimh path.

Last question that could help me decide is whether I would really be at a disadvantage if I stuck with nimh, considering I would be racing at A/B final level at the local club. I.e. if you drove the same car with a 4000mah nimh vs lipo, how much of a difference would it make in real terms.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

Go lipo, look for some second hand stuff on here.

Any money you spend on nimh will be money down the drain, IMHO

Lipo all the way, buy a brand new one if funds allow. Something around 5000mah 50-60c

Certainly invest in a decent charger now, which will do both Lipo and NMIH cells.
you can do a race meeting on 2 Lipo packs, just topping them up after each race.
stick Lipo packs, 5000mAh 50C brca legal can be had cheaply, look for gensace. I suspect he may need saddles, which do cost a bit more, but will last, give excellent power output, and will have a value if you decide to sell up.

Somehow I knew you guys were going to say that:-) It does make sense, its just the funds as I need a car, motor and esc, as well as the cells. Thought if I could keep the charger it would save me a bit of brass.

Cars I am thinking of are, Durango 210/410 or TA B4.1 or 44.1. Not decided on 2wd vs 4wd. Are they all saddle configuration?

Cheers for the replies so far.

Always buy saddles, even if you get stick pack car. It just saves you getting more cells if you get a 4wd or another car that you need saddles.

A charger will cost about £50. The UAC50 in excellent for the money.
